Scouting Bordeaux, France: Day 7’s Excursions in Bordeaux, France

On our last full day aboard the France portion of the Founder’s Grand Cruise, the scouting team took full advantage of the brilliant city of Bordeaux, France. Staying overnight in the city, we had the opportunity to wake up to a bike or walking tour, each visiting the historic Old Town district and a number of other great locations. Our ship was docked along the Garonne River in a lovely part of town that was close to nearly everything, including the Cité du Vin, a museum showcasing the history of the area’s wine. With lots to do before our journey took us to Pamplona, Spain, we enjoyed every bit of Bordeaux.

Morning Excursion: “Do as the Locals Do” Bordeaux Walking Tour

The first excursion to leave on Day 7, the walking tour invited travelers into the heart of Bordeaux to see landmarks, shops, and unique cafes. It took the largest number of cruisers from the ship, so everyone was split into one of two groups to make navigating the crowded, narrow streets of Old Town easier.
With the “Do as the Locals Do” tour, we were shown the best places to buy local delicacies and a number of great spots around the city. One of the highlights was the towering Bordeaux Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Now protected by UNESCO as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, the cathedral is an impressive feature on the city’s skyline. We also made a refreshment stop at L'Alchimiste Café, a popular Bordeaux coffee shop with some of the best chocolate in town.
The tour allowed us plenty of time to see Old Town and many features along the riverside, leaving our team pleased. An immersive experience that revealed the daily life of Bordeaux’s residents and an endless amount of history, this tour was a perfect way to get a feel for the inner workings of the city.

Morning Excursion: “Let’s Go” Bike Bordeaux Backstreets Tour

The other tour brought us across a large portion of Bordeaux, while also giving us time to take in the sights and find a few hidden gems. With our Bordeaux By Bike guide and bicycles sourced from the ship, we set out from the Quai Chartrons, the riverside shopping center where our ship was moored.
Over the next four hours we visited an extraordinary number of attractions. On the left bank we first cycled by War War II Submarine pens, avant-garde architecturally designed residences, a repurposed wine repository-turned-business school and the stunning and totally unique Cité du Vin. Crossing over the Pont Jacques Chaban Delmas to the right bank, we visited the Darwin Project, a repurposed military barracks now filled with shops, venues, a skatepark, and eco-friendly living. After, we were treated to superb views across the Garonne to the classic facades of Bordeaux. Our guide led us across the river once more via the Pont de Pierre, whereupon we entered Old Town and navigated the tiny squares, narrow streets, the Bell Tower and the Bordeaux Cathedral. For the next hour, our guide led us through several inner commercial and residential districts in this classical city, as we cycled through the Jardin Botanique de Bordeaux and past the remaining wall of a 2nd century Roman amphitheater – the Palais Gallien – before arriving back at the ship.
The group that participated in this excursion was incredibly happy to have been given access to so much of Bordeaux within four hours, praising this as one of the best tours on the Founder's Grand Cruise so far.

Afternoon Excursion: A Visit to the Cité du Vin Museum

After lunch aboard the SS Bon Voyage, our team set off to explore the Cité du Vin, Bordeaux’s most famous museum. We collected free tickets from the ship’s front desk, and then made the 15-minute walk along the city’s bustling riverside Quai Chartrons shopping center.

Upon arriving, we showed our tickets and made our way into the wine decanter-shaped museum. With exhibits taking up many of its floors, the Cité du Vin was the perfect place to learn everything there is to know about Bordeaux wine. The museum features a sprawling gift shop and its own wine store, a beautiful, cylindrical room that highlights wines from all over France. We found everything from premium Grand Crus, costing thousands, to small winery bottles that were only a few euros. Further into the museum, we visited a library of wine books and exhibits that revealed the winemaking process and its history.
Two of the greatest features of the Cité du Vin are its observation deck and restaurant, located on the top two floors of the museum. Each overlooks the city of Bordeaux from above, one serving delicious food and the other an ever-changing list of Bordeaux wines. Though a quick afternoon activity, the museum was a great attraction that we’d recommend anyone visiting Bordeaux make time for.

Evening Excursion: Retro Sidecar Romantic Bordeaux Tour

Later that evening, two members of our team participated in a sidecar tour alongside a retro motorcycle. Manned by an experienced local tour guide from Retro Tour Bordeaux by the name of Alexandre, they set out on the town at 9 PM. Down streets lit by old iron lamps, while bars and lounges filled with nightlife, the tour hurtled down narrow streets to find the greatest nighttime views.
The Retro Tour stopped twice on its route, once at our guide’s favorite place to find canelés – Bordeaux’s famous pastry – and again for a glass of champagne. Driving around the city at nighttime, you could feel the romance of France come more alive with each passing minute. The tour offered one of the most picturesque experiences on the entire trip, an experience of Bordeaux’s nightlife that few ever get to see.

A Retrospective of Day Seven’s Excursions

Day Seven of the Founder’s Grand Cruise allowed us the best access to Bordeaux that we’d had so far. Packed with adventures, our last full day in France was one that the Authentic Voyages team will remember fondly. Each excursion was unique in its own way – the walking tour allowed us to truly take in and learn about Old Town Bordeaux, while the cycling tour showed us a broader picture of one of the world’s most bicycle friendly cities. The Cité du Vin, one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful buildings, gave us greater insight to the local wine, and the retro sidecar tour offered a classically French, romantic night on the town.
If one could fit them all in, we’d recommend every excursion of the day, as they were all brilliant in their own right. For our last full day in France, this was certainly one for the books. We look forward to keeping you updated on the next leg of our journey, as we depart France and take the Authentic Voyages Pyrenees Express to Pamplona, Spain.

Scouting Bordeaux, France: Day 6’s Excursions in Libourne, France

On Day Six of our Founder’s Grand Cruise scouting trip, we stayed for an additional day in the colorful city of Libourne. Having arrived the day before when we used the city as a gateway to explore Saint-Émilion, the SS Bon Voyage docked overnight to allow us one additional morning. We stayed aside the city on the Dordogne River, waking early to take in a beautiful sunrise and the tidal bore.
Later on, we took part in two separate excursions to learn about Libourne and its culture: a “Village Day” walking tour and a bicycling tour, both of which made a point to visit the weekly farmer’s market. When we set sail for Bordeaux that afternoon, our group was also able to participate in a paint and wine workshop aboard our ship before a farewell reception with the ship’s captain.

The Morning Mascaret

Docked on the Dordogne River in Libourne, we had the opportunity to watch the famed mascaret – a rare phenomenon that only happens on some 80 rivers around the world. The mascaret is a tidal bore, where the direction of the river’s tide reverses to cause a powerful wave. In preparation for the force of nature, the SS Bon Voyage disembarked from its pier and sailed into the middle of the Dordogne. Angling the ship to face the tidal bore head on, the captain must’ve felt like a matador as he awaits the charging bull. A wave of intensity powering through the tranquil morning, the mascaret was an exciting way to start the day.

Morning Excursion: Libourne “Village Day” with Farmer’s Market

Half of the Authentic Voyages team participated in a walking tour of Libourne later in the morning. With our guide, we stepped off the ship and into the midst of the city. Bustling and alive with commutes, shopping, and all forms of daily life, we were shown the often missed details of Libourne – hallmarks of its culture, arts, and architecture.
After our brief walking tour, we were turned loose on the weekly Farmer’s Market, which covered the entirety of the city’s main square, the Place Abel-Surchamp. Surrounded by arcades, local shops, and eateries, farmer’s market vendors set up their stands early in the morning. It seemed as if everyone in Libourne came out to purchase fresh vegetables, meats, delicacies, and all other manner of goods that day. The members of our team that attended this excursion had a delightful time browsing the shops, picking up local souvenirs and treats. Taking place on the busy city streets of Libourne, our team was pleased with this immersive excursion. With a knowledgeable guide that shared little-known facts about the city, this tour was perfect for those seeking a deeper understanding of Libourne’s culture.

Morning Excursion: Bike Ride along the Dordogne River

The other portion of our Founder’s Grand Cruise scouting team embarked on a bicycle tour following Libourne’s Dordogne River. From the ship, we rode along the city’s riverside trail until its end, then onward into the surrounding countryside. Throughout the journey, we made several stops to learn about the Dordogne, local history, interesting automobiles, wine, and more. Cycling amidst the Dordogne’s vineyards, our group stopped to taste and learn about a few of the local grapes. We even had the opportunity to tour a small historic church, built as an indirect part of a local castle – the Château de Condat.

Once we made our way back into the city, our tour led us to the Place Abel-Surchamp as well, where the farmer’s market was wrapping up. After a brief opportunity to browse the market, we entered the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology of Libourne with our guide for a brief tour of the small, but magnificent, collection. Once our tour of the museum was over, we got back on our bicycles and pedaled to the ship to end our excursion. Overall, our group was impressed by the bicycle tour of the Dordogne, our knowledgeable guide, and the amount of city we were able to cover. We’d highly recommend this for any active individual interested in making the most of their time in Libourne.

The Paint and Wine Workshop

Later in the afternoon, a few members of our team attended a workshop where watercolor painting was paired with wine. The event was held on the top deck of our ship, in a small café lit by the day’s bright sunshine. With a brief instruction from our a local artist, we were given the necessary supplies – and delicious wine handpicked by the ship's sommelier – and then set free to paint to our heart’s desire. This relaxed activity was the ship’s first on-board excursion, a pleasant and easygoing experience suited for everyone.

A Retrospective of Day Six’s Excursions

Each excursion on Day Six left our team with fond memories and loads of great photos to share with our loved ones. The village day, bicycle tour, and painting workshop were all wonderful in their own unique way, allowing us to further immerse ourselves in the French culture as we neared the next leg of our grand Hemingway tour, Spain. From the early morning mascaret to a cocktail reception in the evening, the entire day was packed with great experiences. As our journey continues, we look forward to sharing more details from our Founder’s Grand Cruise with you.

Scouting Bordeaux, France: Day 5’s Excursions in Saint-Émilion

On Day 5 of our Founder’s Grand Cruise scouting trip, our team docked in the brilliant city of Libourne -- a colorful city and a gateway to historic France -- for a day of lively activities. One of our best days on the trip so far, we tasted the wine, sampled the food, and walked the UNESCO-protected streets of Saint-Émilion, France. Today, our team participated in a walking tour through historic St. Émilion, visited the remarkable Chateau de Ferrand for a wine tasting, then headed back into St. Émilion to explore and have lunch on our own. Another member of our scouting team attended a cooking class to learn to cook just as the French do.

Morning Excursion Part One: Saint-Émilion Walking Tour

Early on the morning of Day 5, our group boarded a bus bound for St. Émilion with our guide. Delivering an educational intro to the town as we simultaneously drove into it, we were prepared by the time our 25 minute ride was over. Along the way, our bus passed by field after field of perfectly arranged grape vines as the sun rose overhead and the ancient walls of St. Émilion approached.
Upon our arrival to town, the guide and group disembarked the bus directly into the heart of Saint-Émilion. We walked cobblestone streets lined with ancient buildings, many of which have been lovingly turned into shops, cafés, and art galleries. Around every new corner, historic beauty seemed to await us in this photogenic town. Along the excursion, we had the opportunity to learn about Émilion the saint, the 8th century figure whom the destination gets its name from. We traveled underground into the Monolithic Church, a massive structure carved right out of the area’s stone. The entire tour delivered remarkable information and beauty with each turn, leaving us overjoyed and impatient for our later return.

Morning Excursion Part Two: Wine Tasting at Chateau de Ferrand

The second treat on this memorable day was a visit to the Chateau de Ferrand winery to sample Saint- Émilion wine. The chateau is owned by the Bich family, who created their wealth through the worldwide sales of their impressive and simplistic pen called “The Bic.” The sommelier was especially articulate and took us on a leisurely stroll along a row of 25 year old vines, explaining the importance of “terroir” – the specific plot of land that helps give each wine its distinctive characteristics.
The winery has received France’s highest rating for wine in the region, rated on a basis of the terroir, the facilities, the quality of the grape, and the wine itself. During our tasting, we had the opportunity to try two different versions of Chateau de Ferrand St-Émilion Grand Cru, one from 2011 and the other a 2016, to learn about the difference that aging can make.

Morning Excursion Part Three: Return to Saint-Émilion

Full of great information and wine, our scouting team returned to the village of Saint-Émilion for lunch and more time to explore. Staying well into the afternoon, we ended up visiting several of the unique gift shops to pick up postcards, French music boxes, and delicate treats. Our scouting team dined at the La Cabane d'Amélie for lunch, a terrific little café tucked right into the city’s historic buildings that produces a phenomenal smoked salmon tartine. We were very impressed by Saint-Émilion, a unique place that only kept getting better for us.

Afternoon Excursion: Cooking Class at the Château Ambe Tour Pourret

At the same time as our afternoon exploring in St. Émilion, another member of the Authentic Voyages team chose to participate in a cooking class at a nearby chateau. Taught by a local chef who specialized in the French cuisine, the class turned out to be an unforgettable experience. As the class cooked through the afternoon, they made a black rice risotto topped with compote and scallops, seared duck topping a bed of zucchini and ratatouille, and a panna cotta made with spiced rum and poppy seed. All of the dishes impressed, and the chef himself was a wonderful character who’d even written his own book.

A Retrospective of Day Five’s Excursions

Day 5 of the French river cruise portion of the Founder’s Grand Cruise, our team was entirely impressed. Every member of our scouting team loved the excursions, and having a bit of time to explore a UNESCO-protected city certainly didn’t hurt either. From cooking courses to Grand Cru chateau tours, Day Five of our trip was a resounding success in our books.
