Get to Know Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is located on Mount Desert Island on the Northeastern shore. The Wabanaki Indians called it "Pemetic," which translates to "range of mountains." Bar Harbor is about 63.11 square miles. Since Acadia National Park is located just a couple of miles down the road from town, there are plenty of summer activities like hiking, biking, bird watching, and even carriage rides.
The town suffered a severe drought in October of 1947. As a result, it led to a horrible wildfire at a cranberry bog that burnt until November. Nearly half of the eastern side of Mount Desert Island was a loss including 67 massive summer homes on Millionaire's Row, 5 historic grand hotels, and 170 permanent residences. It didn't stop there though, more than 10,000 acres of the Acadia National Park were burnt. About the only thing unscathed was the downtown business district. Bar Harbor was also a historic spot for the WWII as it was a naval hub practice location. The town has a booming lumber, shipbuilding, agriculture and fishing industries. It is also well-known for being a seasonal home to famous businessmen and artists such as John D. Rockefeller Jr., Burt's Bees co-founder, and Martha Stewart.
