Located right in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, Cozumel is a known to be one of the most popular ports of call for Caribbean Cruises. The island was first spotted by the Spanish Conquistador Juan de Grijalva around the 1500s. The land was originally called "Santa Cruz" before it adopted its current name "Cozumel," which stands for "Isla de Golondrinas" (Island of Swallows). After Spanish invasion, Cozumel was deserted until the Castas War occurred. During this war, Mayans looked for shelter and immigrated back to Cozumel Island.
