Get to Know Cancun
Cancun is a popular destination for Caribbean Cruises. It is located in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico, in the municipality Benito Juarez and has a population of 944,000 (in 2020). Tourism is the major economic activity in Cancun, as the city accommodates around 2 million visitors annually.
Cancun was originally known as Nizuc (which means "point of grass"). The name by we know it today did not appear in maps until the 18th century; "Cancun" means "throne of the snake," a very symbolic creature to the pre-Colombian civilization. The years after the Conquest left the region without any Mayans; they either leave or died from one of the prominent diseases at the time, warfare, or famine. The only Mayan settlements left situated on the nearby islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.
In 1970, Cancun's only population was a result to some plantations located in the region. That changed when investors decided to capitalize on this unknown Caribbean jewel. The Mexican federal government financed the first 9 hotels, and Cancun experienced an exponential growth. The rest is history. This caused more development and more tourism promotion supported by the country, and resulted in the well-structured city that we know today. As of today, Cancun is home to many Mexicans, and the population of residents from the rest of the Americas and Europe continues to grow.
