Get to Know Santiago de Cuba
Santiago de Cuba was founded in 1515 and it is home to 555 thousand "Santiagueros" (or locals). It is the capital of Santiago de Cuba providence, and it is the 5th village founded by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez. As the second-largest city in Cuba, Santiago strongly contributes to the Cuban economy through agriculture, banana and coffee plantations, and a large sea port. The city holds lots of history in it since it was where a major defeat for Spanish troops occurred during the Spanish-American War. Also, Santiago was where Fidel Castro proclaimed Cuban Revolution from the city hall. Its history, culture, and well-preserved architecture make Santiago de Cuba one of the top destinations for Caribbean cruises and a World Heritage site.
