Budapest is settled around the Danube River, a popular waterway for river cruises with its own ancient history. The Danube is a popular trade route in Europe and has been for almost as long as we can date back. The river is great for fishing and sightseeing, and is a calm backdrop to the bustling city of Budapest.

The city was originally built around the Danube River for access to the popular trade route. It’s grown considerably since then, but many of its original parts are still intact. The districts around the Danube and central Budapest are UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s no wonder why -- the waterway is perfectly formed, with concrete banks that stretch and wind along with the river.

From the Danube, you have views of the city and its magnificent buildings. The river runs through the middle of the city, so it’s built up on both sides. There are tons of massive buildings, art installations, and history lining the banks. 

• ​The Hungarian Parliament building. This feature towers over parts of the river, providing a well-lit scene at night. It’s Gothic Revival architectural styling, with spyres and countless arches, gives it a striking appearance reminiscent of classic European cathedrals. The building is a great sight during the day, but an even better one when the sun’s down due to the lights along its entire facade. 
• Vajdahunyad Castle. Located in City Park, the castle is a one-of-a-kind structure highlighting all of Hungary’s most prominent architectural styles. Another visible from the water, and a great place to relax and watch boats pass by, is the Fisherman’s Bastion. Another historic spot, this one looks over the river and provides great views of the city.
• The Chain Bridge. Built in 1849, the Chain Bridge spans the Danube. Boats and ships pass under all day and night, and pedestrians get from one side of the city to the other with it. When it was built, the Chain Bridge was a great feat of engineering known throughout the world.
• The Shoes on the Danube. This monument is one of the most solemn experiences along Budapest’s stretch of the namesake river. The collection of metal shoes are a tribute to victims of a fascist group from World War II, and are a popular installation for tourists and Hungarians who remember the tragedies. 
• Margaret Island. This gorgeous park is located on a small island on the Danube. It’s full of flower gardens and tranquil places to sit back and relax. Better yet, it has a few small cafes where you’ll be able to grab a delicious snack before your flower spotting excursion.

1. Jewish Quarter. The city’’s Jewish Quarter is not only a historic religious district, but also Budapest’s most vibrant bar scene. You can almost always find live music or great food to eat too, making it a can’t-miss stop for those looking to get a taste of Budapest’s nightlife.
2. Szechenyi Spa Baths. After a long day of walking around the city, there’s nothing better than a massage. At the Szechenyi Spa Baths, you’ll be able to relax and check out a historic building while conversing with locals and tourists alike. 
3. Central Market Hall. This shopping center is the quintessential European marketplace. You’ll be able to find just about anything under the sun here -- whether that’s produce, souvenirs, snacks, or clothing. Also known as the Great Market Hall, this has been an establishment in Hungary for over 100 years. 
4. Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art. The Ludwig Museum is home to a variety of famous artworks. A great stop for any art lover, the museum regularly hosts less well-known artists while also maintaining its classics. An afternoon spent browsing the Ludwig Museum is one of the most peaceful and educational things you can do in Budapest.
5. Szimpla Kert. The most surprising to make the list, this part-bar, part-art installation is famous for its unique style. More than just drinks, it offers a sprawling space filled with curated junk. While it sounds strange, it’s inspired tons of other establishments and is absolutely worth visiting.
