Inviting you to explore one of Germany's most populous and warm cities, Cologne river cruises are an experience that can't be missed. Situated along the mighty Rhine River, Cologne is a popular riverside destination for tourists and German nationals alike. The city is best known for its outstanding architecture, featuring multiple Gothic cathedrals. It's also the place where "cologne" -- the now general term used to refer to men's perfume -- originated, all the way back in 1709. Dating back to the early 1st century as a city, founded by the Romans, Cologne is a German metropolis with endless history to explore.
See the Cathedrals of CologneUpon arrival in Cologne, one of the first thing any visitor notices are the incredible cathedrals. Towering above the skyline with intricate details that could only be created by the finest artisans, Cologne Cathedral is the largest of the city's churches, most notable for its two towers which soar an astonishing 157 meters into the air. While by today's standards that may not seem too high, it's important to note that Cologne Cathedral was built during the Middles Ages, from 1248 to 1322. Today, this is one of the largest churches in Europe, considered one of Gothic architecture's masterpieces, and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
While Cologne Cathedral is the most famous of the city's cathedrals, there are many more worth noting. Altenberg Cathedral is one of those just outside city limits, unique in that it's been used by Catholic and Protestant congregations, known for its Early Gothic style. St. Gereon's Basilica is one of the city's oldest churches, built over the years but finally finished in 1227 in the Romanesque style. The last on our list, which by no means features all the magnificent churches in Cologne, is the Basilica of the Holy Apostles. Found near the center of town and dedicated to the biblical twelve apostles, this beautiful building is in the Romanesque style, but features a Byzantine-esque roof.
