Get to Know City Miami
Miami is full of history. Originally, the Tequestra tribe lived in Miami long before European contact (they migrated over to Cuba after the Spanish invasion). While Spaniards were ruling, their attempt to oppress and remove de Seminole made the region a setting for the Second Seminole War. The Spanish ceded Miami back to the United States in 1821.
Miami was officially incorporated until 1896, and it's known to be one of the few U.S. cities founded by a woman, Julia Tuttle (who owned the land where the city resides). The Great Freeze of 1894 froze all of Florida's plantations except for Miami's. This contributed to the Florida East Coast Railway extension towards the Miami region, causing an economic boom.
Miami was hit by the historic Miami Hurricane in 1926, and was also a key base for U.S. defense against the German attacks in 1939. Miami overcame despite the hurdles, and kept growing exponentially until it became the third most populous metropolis on the East Coast of the U.S.
Today, Miami, Florida is a leader in commerce, finance, culture, arts, and trade. Not to mention, PortMiami is the busiest cruise port in the world in both commercial and tourist segments. The Magic City of Miami is a major sensation for international visitors and there are plenty of reasons why.
